Got a call from Jessi today: the kids needed to leave early because of the snow, so they'd be eating at 4:15, cutting 45 minutes from our normal time. We decided to come in anyway. It was a smaller-than-usual group. We:
--Played Indian Chief until everyone was satisfied
--Began teaching them the mirror exercise
By the time we got to the mirror, only eight were left: Chloe, Aisha, Donald, Korea, Micah, Nautica, Jose, and Zach. Again, we shouldn't have let Micah partner with Nautica and Jose with Zach: they were rowdy pairs, unable to focus. But Chloe/Aisha and Donald/Korea did really well with the exercise, and so we had Chloe/Aisha show everybody else how good they were at "being a mirror." We told them to pick one person to lead but not tell us who, and had the rest of the kids see if they could figure out who the leader was: a way of keeping everyone engaged.
That was all we had time for. This puts us a little behind on the schedule, but we have lots of padding built in, so it should be fine.
They are much more manageable in smaller quantities, which makes me think we ought to consider breaking them up into smaller groups more frequently.
Most exciting today: when we walked down the stairs at 3:40, some of the girls who were sitting and reading aloud in the reading area got excited to see us -- they waved and smiled (Micah, Aisha).
